    WINTER MOON

    [CHAPTER ONE] RETURNING FROM SECLUSION

“Still having the dreams?” Molly Shafer asked, looking solemnly at a man resting on a reclined leather chair.

“Yes, but they seem to change,” the man said, his eyes closed trying to envision the dream he had the night previous.

    “How do you mean?”

“The one I had last night... it seemed more detailed then the others.... maybe even longer.”

Molly, an attractive blonde haired woman in her mid thirties, sighed, tapping her pencil on a pad of paper. “Can you tell me about them? Are you able to?”

“It starts off like all the rest. I’m walking in an open field and they’re in the distance...”

“When you say ‘they’ you mean–”

“The other Agents. They’re standing together, almost huddling as if they were about to deliver a god damn play or something. As I draw near, their whispers become distinct...”

“You can hear them? You can hear what their whispering?”

    “Yes.”

    “What are they saying?”

“They’re giving me their condolences, telling me how they feel for my loss.”

“Do you say anything back to them?”

“No. I just continue to walk down a path leading to the lake. I can see the boats lifting an object from the waters. My friend, Jack, is standing at the lakes shore, shaking his head back and forth. It is at this time, I know the news isn’t good. Now, I’m watching the boat pull into a small dock... their unloading the object onto a stroller. I begin to run. Jack sees me and gives chase... he’s yelling for me to stop, but I won’t.... I have to make sure it’s Daniel,” the man said, his dream becoming crystal clear. “They’re loading the stroller into the ambulance... a white sheet covers the object. Before I can pull the sheet back, Jack pulls me away. I tell him to let me go, but he insists it’s for my own good. Finally, I push myself from him and lunge for the white sheet. I pull the white cloth back –”

    “Is it Daniel?”

“Yes, but it doesn’t look like him. He is purple... there are cuts and bruises covering much of his body, and his eyes are as white as newly found pearls. I fall to the floor in disbelief... I had killed my own son.”

“Kill? Brian you didn’t kill your son. It wasn’t your fault –”

“I had witnessed numerous cases, involving child kidnappings, and I was able to solve those... yet I couldn’t even solve a case when MY childs life was at stake... I was so busy playing victim father, that I had forgotten I was a detective too.”

“Brian, you have to stop blaming yourself for Daniel’s death. Your always thinking of what you should of done, and not what you could have. Do you honestly believe you could have found Daniel before he was murdered? You had the FBI working round the clock in search for your little boy, not to mention your own precinct. Let your guilt go, Brian, it’ll destroy you if you don’t.”

Sitting up in his seat, Brian sighed. An awkward moment of silence fell upon them. Suddenly his cellphone rang. Hesitantly, Brian answered the phone after four rings. Rising from his chair, he entered the corner of the room, gesturing for Molly to wait a minute. Molly nodded and patiently awaited his return. Attaching the cellphone to his belt, Brian entered the middle of the office.

    “Time’s up,” he said.

Molly smiled, “Funny... that’s usually my line. Are you sure your ready to go back to work?”

“I’ve been secluded from the rest of the world long enough... I have to keep myself busy. Thanks for all your help Dr. Shafer, I really –”

“Call me Molly... I think we’ve surpassed this whole doctor – patient thing.”

“Okay... Molly. Don’t be surprised if I inadvertently stop by sometime in the near future,” Brian said heading towards the door.

    “I’ll be waiting. And Brian?”

Brian turned his head in response to his name.

    “Be careful out there okay?”

    “I always am,” he replied.
